Who is Sylvia?

Career Coach and Leadership Coach
Academic & Career Qualifications Prior to embarking on a career in coaching, I worked in the Information Technology (I.T. ) field for 13 years. I hold a Bachelor of Mathematics, in Computer Science, from University of Waterloo. My I.T. career encompassed work in high-tech, telecommunications, financial services, crown corporations, and management consulting.

In March of 2005, I began my coaching business. I am a graduate of
Coach U and hold the designation of Professional Certified Coach (PCC) through the International Coach Federation. I am also a Competent Toastmaster (CTM).

I provide one-on-one coaching and offer customized workshops on specific topics. I have designed and facilitated over 25 customized workshops for diverse clients. My style is interactive and engaging, which has led to consistent positive reviews and repeat business.

Core Beliefs

I believe that:

  • Aligning how you live your life with your values are keys to your success, happiness, and fulfillment.
  • Focusing on your strengths and what you love to do is more effective than putting a lot of effort towards shoring up your weaknesses.

Values

“Your Values are behaviour and activities to which you are naturally drawn. Values are who you really are.” 1

In this context, my true values are to:

  • Catalyze • to impact others, to move forward, to coach, to encourage, to stimulate, to influence, to energize.
  • Discover • to learn, to realize, to observe, to uncover, to discern, to perceive.
  • Relate • to be connected, to be with, to unite, to be part of community, to be integrated, to bond.
  • Contribute • to serve, to improve, to strengthen, to facilitate, to assist.

I serve as a catalyst for change by partnering with my coaching clients and building relationships of trust. I am living my life aligned with my values.

Strengths

“Each person’s greatest room for growth is in the areas of his or her greatest strength. Capitalize on your strengths and manage around your weaknesses.” 2

In this context, my strengths are:

  • Connectedness • things happen for a reason; we are all connected; we are all part of a larger picture; considerate, caring and accepting.
  • Input • inquisitive; collects information; finds many things interesting. The world is exciting because of its infinite variety and complexity
  • Learner • loves to learn; energized by the steady journey from ignorance to competence; the outcome of the learning is less significant than the “getting there”.
  • Positivity • generous with praise; quick to smile; enthusiasm is contagious; celebrate every achievement.
  • Empathy • sense the emotions of people around me; intuitively see the world through their eyes; instinctive ability to understand.

I bring my strengths to each coaching relationship, through connecting, discovering, learning, celebrating, and drawing on my intuition.

Life Experience Qualifications

I have evolved through many significant transitions

  • from an employee/team member to a manager/team leader
  • from a career in Information Technology to a career in Coaching
  • from employee to self-employed
  • from ill-effects of trauma to healthful recovery
  • from chronic pain on a daily basis to pain management
  • from being an adoptee without a family history to a reunion with birth family
  • from marriage through separation to divorce

I’ve been around the block, a few times! Throughout these transitions, I experienced fear and excitement, evolution and growth. Now, as a professional coach, I draw on my vast experience and intuition, coupled with my formal training in coaching to guide my clients towards who they want to be.

Other Interests

I live in the beautiful capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I enjoy keeping active and moving forward. In Ottawa, I often bicycle and rollerblade along the river and canals. Being in nature brings me to life, so I spend a lot of time exploring the Gatineau Hills: hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. I’m passionate about sailing, and race keelboats on the Ottawa River. My creative outlets include playing the piano and writing. I am, also, a volunteer instructor with the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada.
